Description

Farmer-reported climate events are independently reflected in multiple remote sensing datasets, suggesting that this information can be used for risk management instruments design. Specifically, adjusting remote sensing-based index insurance models to better match farmers’ reports can reduce the “basis risk” - that is, the difference between payouts and farmers’ actual losses. For this data combination to be successful, however, there is a need for systematic, innovative, and cost-effective approaches to get large numbers of smallholders to produce reliable data regularly. The overarching goal of this proposal is to use gamification as an innovative way to engage and incentivize the generation of climate information and provide access to traditionally excluded and vulnerable actors such as women in rural areas.
